Dialogue[edit]
I was looking over your edit here and noticed that you wrote "its" where "it's" would be grammatically correct. Was that how the line was written in-game, in which case it should be tagged as such, or was it just a typo on your part? Nice work filling out the Online pages, by the way.--Rook (talk) 20:22, 28 December 2018 (UTC)
- I believe that's how it was written in-game. My main character is parked in the crafting area that npc lives in, so I'll go back and double-check it once I've finished the walkthrough I'm writing.MolagBallet (talk) 21:13, 28 December 2018 (UTC)
Mount Images[edit]
Hey MolagBallet, nice work with all the mount images! I notice a lot of them are not 1:1 ratio (square), so if you're uploading any more or still have the original files you might crop them accordingly to meet our usual image standards. Keep it up! —Legoless (talk) 00:29, 11 January 2019 (UTC)
Image Categories[edit]
Remember to add categories when you upload images. You should be able to do this below the licensing drop down menu (I think you may have to enable the HotCat gadget). If that doesn't work you can always put it on a new line in the description. The majority of the uncategorized files list are all those prerelease images you recently uploaded.
Other than that, good job on all the effort you've put in the last few months! —Dillonn241 (talk) 09:52, 4 February 2019 (UTC)
- Which categories should I put these prerelease images into? MolagBallet (talk) 21:27, 4 February 2019 (UTC)
-
- Should be Category:Online-Pre release Images. If in doubt, you can always look for another image with the same prefix (ON-prerelease-). —Dillonn241 (talk) 15:53, 5 February 2019 (UTC)

Morrowind Dialogue[edit]
Hey MolagBallet, I noticed you added dialogue to Morrowind:Dubdilla. Per this page, any NPC with unique dialogue should actually have their own article created rather than continue to simply redirect to the People table on their location page. Feel free to go ahead and make an article if you come across any other NPCs with unique dialogue. —Legoless (talk) 13:02, 9 February 2019 (UTC)
- Actually, it seems the reason this NPC doesn't have a page is because that dialogue is not unique to her to begin with. I've removed it from the article. —Legoless (talk) 13:16, 9 February 2019 (UTC)
Stubs[edit]
Hi MolagBallet! Thank you so much for your help with the Online namespace! I absolutely don't mean to discourage you in any way, but I've noticed some pages getting destubbed before their time. Now, you don't have to do the super-detailed walkthroughs I tend to (that's an older one that's no longer quite up to current standard, but you get the idea), but as a general rule if there's still relevant information to add to an article, especially if it's not covered by a {{huh}} or a template, leave the stub tag up. For example, this edit is not quite enough for the article to be destubbed. There's a lot more information to be added. Where to get the heartstones, for one, alongside directions, dialogue, and so on. The stub signals that there's still work to be done. I know getting Online namespace even close to the standards of the earlier games is a monumental task, but take it one step at a time. Thank you! —likelolwhat talk lulzy to me 20:16, 8 March 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks for speaking up! Generally, I'll try to destub things that look like there's nothing else to add. Like NPCs who you can pickpocket, but not much else. I hadn't thought about stuff like heartstone locations being important, so I'll be more mindful when considering destubbing things like quest pages from now on. MolagBallet (talk) 20:31, 8 March 2019 (UTC)

Moving Images and Changing File Names[edit]
Hey there, I noticed on the File:ON-npc-Maralie Rendas.jpg page, that you reuploaded it with the correct name. I've made mistakes like that before and I'd like to point out an easier way of fixing it. On any said page, there should be tab called move which is located between the history and watch tabs. It will allow you to rename the file without having to re-upload the image. When this is done, the old title will become a redirect page to the new title. And it can later be dealt with.
Someone else showed me this, so I may as well pass on the information.--Talyyn (talk) 13:32, 24 May 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks for the tip! I was going to try that with that file, but I wasn't sure that the new name would transfer over. MolagBallet (talk) 01:53, 25 May 2019 (UTC)

Quest Page Edits[edit]
Hello! I guess we're both working today - I see you're undoing several edits I'm making to quest listings on several pages (including the main Quests, Side Quests, Miscellaneous, and other pages), all of which are to correct many inconsistencies across these pages in terms of how quests are labeled across the wiki as well as how they're actually treated in game. There is a method to what I'm doing, and the reversions your trying to make to certain settlement/town pages are inconsistent with previously existing town page structure (i.e. before my edits today) and also will break several links. Could we please discuss before you do anything further? Thank you! Mikeprichard (talk)mikeprichard
- Hey Mike, I hope your day is going great! I like some of your edits, but the top header for our quest section should be "Related Quests". Please see our Style Guide for more information. Any place page where it is not "Related Quests" should be changed to comply with this (as I'm sure you've seen, this is mostly consistent with the Skyrim and ESO namespaces as we automated our page creation process to include the style templates). I think noting which quests start in a location is useful in a subsection of related quests, for sure, that's a good idea. --AKB Talk Cont Mail 21:13, 15 May 2020 (GMT)
-
- Thank you! However, I've found that this isn't actually the case (see e.g. most of the Skyrim "City" pages prior to today), and in fact results in many incorrectly duplicated quest listings. Although the Style Guide currently doesn't allow for this title, I would ask that it be incorporated in line with these existing City page layouts, as it's much more convenient to distinguish between quests that can be started in the location vs. quests that are started elsewhere. Mikeprichard (talk)mikeprichard
-
-
- That's my fault. Back in 2011 when we did bot runs, we made the city pages first before we changed our template a week later to be "Related Quests". It was simply missed after that because the headers are fairly similar, and it wasn't a large concern with everything else Skyrim-related that needed to be done. The pages that have "Quests Starting Here" are wrong. --AKB Talk Cont Mail 21:25, 15 May 2020 (GMT)
-
-
-
-
- Ah...however, I've just put several hours of work into aligning the pages in this way, as I find your initial city page layout infinitely more useful - when I visit a location, I naturally want to know which quests I can pick up there, while I can separately review on the location page quests that involve the location but don't start there. Having everything jumbled together in one category makes this impossible. So, can we please consider restoring the "Quests Started Here" heading to the template? I feel the pages are only "wrong" if we collectively say they're wrong - if there's a good reason to change something (as I believe there is here), we should be flexible! I do appreciate this discussion, as it's helped me to understand how things have developed on the pages so far. Mikeprichard (talk)mikeprichard

- I do appreciate your willingness to learn, and I agree this should be discussed further! As outlined in the style guide, cities (like Windhelm, not smaller locations such as Darkwater Crossing) are the only places in the Skyrim namespace that are supposed to use "Quests Started Here" as their primary heading. To allow the discussion to get more traction/responses, you should post about it on the Community Portal, and we should wait a bit for consensus before editing any more places to have the header. Style Guide changes require community consensus, and the Community Portal is an excellent place for people to find the discussion and weigh in. --MolagBallet (talk) 21:51, 15 May 2020 (GMT)

- OK, I'll pause the edits for now, and will post there! I would appreciate it if we could hold off on any further reversions in the meantime, because this really was a lot of work, and I hope others will agree the new structure (which not only will align with the existing city pages, but also with how quests are correctly labeled across many other broader pages) is helpful. Thank you for your time! Mikeprichard (talk)mikeprichard

- You're very welcome! I'll make a few revisions where they're needed, (For example, the Markarth side quest subheading and the merging of "Side Quests" with the "Divines" quest was a welcome change, but the distinction between the Forsworn quests and the other side quests is a bit important considering that things change in-game when you complete them, how you complete them, etc. The Divines subheading was unnecessary.) but I'll respect the formatting pages that have already been altered. - I'm really sorry we're ninja-ing each others edits! However, re: the "Forsworn" title and other edits, please note that I've just completed a broader review of a couple dozen individual location pages as well as the main Skyrim "Quests", "Side Quests", and "Miscellaneous" pages, and before today, there were many (many) inconsistencies across those pages in terms of how quests are categorized, starting logically from the main Quests page. I've therefore relabeled all quest headings on the location pages to appropriately align with the "Quests" page list, which itself is correct to in-game journal data. In these examples, neither the "Divines" nor the "Forsworn" are separate factions with their own quests labeled with unique knotwork in the journal, but rather relate only to general "Side Quests". All of my changes align with this process. So, I would appreciate a discussion here (and I'll keep to the same) if you see anything else. As for the "Quests Starting Here" label, I'm about to post on the Community Portal about restoring this to several pages where it had been removed before, but please don't revert those changes just yet either, as it will break a lot of links on other pages. I frankly didn't realize how actively these specific page headers were being monitored, or I would have posted on the community portal first before going to all this trouble - but I do feel my edits will improve both the accuracy and convenience of the site! Thank you again for taking time to discuss.

Hello again! Great work on the Skyrim city/town/settlement pages today as you began to structure the pages' quest lists under the new main header "Related Quests" followed by the two new subheaders "Quests Starting Here" and "Other Quests". I reviewed your pages, and continued your work to ensure these headers are included in this format and order for all such pages. I think this is a convenient way to organize and find relevant quest info; thanks again for your time and work. Mikeprichard (talk)mikeprichard
- Good evening! I'm glad that we were able to reach a consensus on the issue, and I agree that the way it's organized now is more convenient. I appreciate all the work you've been doing, and am thankful that you brought the issue to light. Thank you for your efforts, and have a great rest of your day! --MolagBallet (talk) 04:17, 1 June 2020 (UTC)

Hello!
I believe there's a portrait of Rada al-Saran within Greymoor Keep if i'm not mistaken. If possible, could you perhaps take a screenshot of that? Thank you for your time. — Unsigned comment by The Oldest Ghost (talk • contribs) at 00:56 on 15 June 2020 (UTC)
- Good evening! I can absolutely do that.
- We have an image of that same painting being viewed in a furnishing preview on Online:Gallery Furnishings/Paintings, but I imagine this request is for the lore page, so an image of the portrait in Greymoor Keep would probably be more appropriate. Date vs Game[edit]
I noticed that you changed a couple of my additions from the date they occurred to the game that they occurred in (2E 582) to ESO. is this how it should be going forward? Retroambassador (talk) 21:31, 22 August 2020 (UTC)
- Yes. Usually, the games (rather than the year) are mentioned in the notes of a page if a specific location appears in another game. For example, you'd say "(place) appears in ESO under the name of/as (eso name)", or simply "(place) also appears in ESO". There's nothing wrong with putting down the year per se, but mentioning the game the location also appears in instead of what year the game takes place in is done for consistency. -MolagBallet (talk) 22:03, 22 August 2020 (UTC)
Quest dialog transcription[edit]
I saw that you fixed some of the dialog transcription i did with a ".lang" file what is that? is there a way to extract quest dialog from the game and is it faster to use that or is it faster to transcribe by hand? — Unsigned comment by Retroambassador (talk • contribs) at 22:59 on 30 August 2020
- The .lang file contains every spoken line of dialogue in the game. It's not organized by any means that are coherent to us, so you'll have to search for keywords using Ctrl+F. The file is located here. To download the most recent version of the lang file, click on update-27pts or update-27pts, then select lang.zip from the list it brings you to. It's a pretty large download, so make sure to take whatever measures you need to make that easier on your bandwidth. Extract the .zip file and open en.lang.csv with whatever text editor you feel most comfortable using. I use my computer's default Notepad application for this. Once you're in, Ctrl+F, type in a part of the sentence you're looking for, search for it, then copy and paste the line onto the page. I hand type most player responses, but use the lang file for NPC dialogue.
- Keep in mind that the names of some quest items, places and NPCs (when referred to in dialogue) may appear as "(<1>)" or "<<A:1>>". If you're having trouble finding a line, try searching for the first, last or middle half of the sentence, whenever a character, place or quest item appears in a line of dialogue. You usually don't have to type much unless the part of the sentence you're typing is super generic (such as searching for "Thank you" as opposed to "Thank you for saving us"). -MolagBallet (talk) 23:12, 30 August 2020 (UTC)
Blood Twilight[edit]
Hi! In Blood Twilight's page you wrote that "[it] is [...] summoned by Talfyg after he steals some of Gwendis's essence", so I just wanted to ask when Talfyg steals an essence of Gwen? Because I personally didn't saw it in the Castle Thorn, as well as my friends, and I wasn't able to see it in any dungeon walkthroughs I watched. — Sphinxmoth (talk) 17:05, 15 September 2020 (UTC)
- I put down what I thought I saw happening on the pts. It's been a few months, but I think I recall a red glow occurring when Talfyg's fist connected with Gwendis's everything, making the "essence/blood" connection in my head. If the description is inaccurate, feel free to change it. --MolagBallet (talk) 17:41, 15 September 2020 (UTC)

Title spacing[edit]
Why are you changing the title spacing from the wiki default (spaces next to the ==)? All new sections (such as this) have the spacing. Also all new sections have a blank line before and after the title line.
DayDreamer (talk) 14:47, 3 November 2020 (UTC)
- Title spacing doesn't actually matter; the wiki default of adding two extra spaces just adds unnecessary characters which have no effect on page layout. The extra spacing before and after a new section can actually be problematic and can disrupt page layout if not accounted for (e.g. making a section edit to General:Interviews#Developer Interviews will result in an extraneous linebreak on the page). —Legoless (talk) 16:40, 3 November 2020 (UTC)
-
- I've generally been removing spaces next to the equation marks since Help:Formatting and Help:Quick Editing Guide both do it that way. I agree it doesn't really matter since it doesn't affect what's displayed, but I think it would be nice to have some consistency. As for the other part, I usually put a blank line before the header but not afterwards, which doesn't disrupt page layout as far as I can tell. --Oriwa Talk 17:06, 3 November 2020 (UTC)
-
-
- When I'm editing, I find it easier to find/read a title when there are spaces inside the equals signs, but I think the more important issue is to aim for consistency within a page (unless transclusion or other issues become a concern). I think the wiki adds spaces mostly to avoid possible format-conflict issues. For example, suppose I'm adding a section to a talk page and I want my displayed header to be "==> Look Here <==". In that instance, the wiki has to add spaces (i.e.,
== ==> Look Here <== ==
) to get a level 2 header instead of a level 4 header, so it just always adds them to be on the safe side. – Robin Hood (talk) 18:15, 3 November 2020 (UTC)

Template on The Face of Change[edit]
Hello :D ! I wrote "The Face of Change" detailed walkthrough today, beginning where you last stopped and to be true to your work I used one of your templates. But I've noticed that when I wrote "{{Showhide|This satisfies the ... quest requirement, but you can choose to question ... further.|{{Highlight Box|" it doesn't do what was it expected to do (which is as you probably remember : showing a menu to see more detailed informations only if one wanted, in case of optional dialogue). Is it because you're the only one to be able to use this template ? Or because of something I don't understand yet ? Since the page is pretty ugly with those broken wiki templates on it, if you've the time to help me I'd be most grateful. It's here : The Face of Change. Thank you for your time and have a good day, week, month and year ! I am but an humble argonian (talk) 20:10, 29 August 2021 (UTC)
- Good afternoon! The showhide and highlight box templates are broken because you didn't close them. Whenever you have a template that starts with two curly brackets, you need to close that template with the same type of brackets. in templates, every instance of opening brackets ( {{ ) requires a set of closing brackets ( }} ) to indicate the template's end, or it breaks. When brackets are left open, the template assumes everything beyond the opening brackets is part of the template, or that it's enclosed in the thing your template is creating. For example:
{{Opening brackets, insert template name, etc|
Content
}} (closing brackets)
- The Highlight box needs its own closing brackets as well; we're using two different templates that need closing.
{{Showhide|The text that appears on the line your show/hide ticker is on|{{Highlight Box|
Content
}} (closing brackets for the highlight box)
}} (closing brackets for the show/hide template)
- Hope this cleared things up! -MolagBallet (talk) 21:44, 29 August 2021 (UTC)

About Jade Dragoons[edit]
Hello, and sorry to bother you again, but I wasn't really clear when I put the vn template on Lord Garesh-ri's page. I meant : it Jade Dragoons or Dragons because it is spelled Dragons somewhere above the Jade Dragoons line without a "the game has the error" notification, which means as you kept the "Dragoons" one "Dragons" was the error. As I just saw you didn't change the "Dragons" line on your most recent edit, I thought you'd be glad to know. And sorry again for being vague in the first place. I am but an humble argonian (talk) 00:59, 5 September 2021 (UTC)
- No problem! They're called the Jade Dragoons. I was unaware of the typo, and assumed it was you assuming "Dragoon" was a typo. I'll go ahead and check the spelling of "Jade Dragon" and ensure it needs a sic. -MolagBallet (talk) 01:02, 5 September 2021 (UTC)

Hey, I want to thank you for telling me another way to transcribe dialogue. I don't usually log in to fill in missing dialogue, which is why I anonymously fill it in as I'm playing the game. — Unsigned comment by Tenacity (talk • contribs) at 00:47 on 4 October 2021

Extracting Molag Bal audio from ESO[edit]
Hey, I noticed you uploaded cut quotes of Molag Bal from ESO onto his page, and I was wondering how you narrowed down the Molag Bal audio from the data files of ESO. I have some of his quotes already, but the files aren't named, and I was only to find his quote by sorting by stereo files in foobar2000. I have the en.lang.csv file with all the game subtitles, but didn't know if this corresponded to any of the actual files. Hope I could get your help on this. Thank you! — Unsigned comment by 128.54.179.14 (talk) at 04:35 on 16 January 2023
- Thanks for reaching out! The order that lines appear within the lang file does not appear to correspond to the order that dialogue is extracted in. My audio work is done by picking a folder with extracted audio, listening to the contents, and renaming the files with what I hear. I've managed to identify a bulk of Molag Bal's (and others) live lines with this method, time-consuming as it is.
- The extracted archives do seem to follow a structure similar to the lang file in a superficial(?) manner: when you're browsing the lang file, you might notice certain trends in the ways lines from certain quests are organized. With Dark Anchor dialogue, depending on your location in the lang file, you may see two Molag Bal lines clustered together with subtitled dialogue from this enemy or that NPC above and below them, then 50+ or however many lines later, you'll find two more Dark Anchor lines with dialogue from the same NPCs above and below them, etc. I've noticed that the audio archives do mirror the lang file in a sense that you'll find dialogue from specific NPCs under specific circumstances clustered together in pretty even intervals, but the exact order of lines doesn't seem identical to the lang file: I haven't been able to use the lang file to locate specific lines.
- I hope this helps in some way! --MolagBallet (talk) 18:01, 16 January 2023 (UTC)

- That does help a bit, thank you! If it's not too much trouble, could I ask you to zip up all the lines you've come across for him and upload them for me to download? - Unfortunately, I'm not sure we can openly distribute ESO game assets like that. Extracting them yourself is one thing, but there might be some legal grey water with redistributing them. I can, however, give you a list containing the numbers these files were exported with: you know how all the files have numbers for names when you run the export process? Most of my files are still labeled with these numbers because I figured it would be useful to preserve them early on in my ventures. I've created a sandbox with the data for you to reference: feel free to copy/paste it into a txt file, etc.

-
- Quick note: in order to upload them here, I had to bring the .ogg files into Audacity and re-export them as .ogg files: the wiki recognized the originals as ".ogx" files, despite the file extension being .ogg. If you come across any trouble with compatibility in whatever program you're using, keep that in mind. Good luck on your project! -MolagBallet (talk) 22:08, 16 January 2023 (UTC)

- Thanks a bunch, this really does help. As for the audio numbers, do you know if there is a better program to rip audio based on those numbers? I am using riffext, but what I get out doesn't seem to match anything you have on there. I tried EsoExtractGUI but there's no way to select individual files on there as far I can tell. Commentary Dialogue in DLC/Chapter Zones[edit]
Hello,
I have a question regarding the Commentary Dialogue that I'm hoping you might know the answer to. All the recorded lines seem to be from the base game and I was curious if the later DLC and Chapter quests also have these?
Either way, thank you for your time--58.111.118.21 16:50, 17 June 2023 (UTC)
- Good morning! DLC and Chapter zones don't have any generic ambient commentary affiliated with their quests. There are set NPCs in the capitals of DLC and Chapter zones that will talk about zone story progression, but those NPCs are subtitled. Other instances of ambient dialogue in Chapters and DLC come from specific NPCs rather than being picked from a pool and said by any old character. -MolagBallet (talk) 17:23, 17 June 2023 (UTC)

Doing the same with Books as we have started with Mounts, etc.[edit]
Hi MolagBallet,
As you have worked making the Mounts and other collectibles play nicely with the furnishing Summary, I am wondering if we can do the same with Books?
It would be great if all the in-game books that have a furnishing component would be able to have both the book Furnishing Summary as well as the Book Infobox and the in-game location AND the text.
Something that Robin had created and added to the Furnishing Summary is the ability to use two trails, in the form of Trail2. I believe this is a valuable piece in these sorts of pages so that the links at the top may take the reader to either place (Books or Library Furnishings).
Thoughts?
Erorah (talk) 21:50, 15 January 2024 (UTC)
- I think this could work, but the Game Book template is a lot broader in scope than the Online Collections template: this probably warrants a post on the template's talk page.
- Personally, I think we could fit a furnishing's information below its location or some such, we just wouldn't be able to format the book page itself like a furnishing page. We'd just be making the infobox for a given book a bit taller with optional parameters that add a few categories to the gamespace page. That seems like a solution that would add all the necessary information with the least amount of obstruction to the book's text. -MolagBallet (talk) 02:22, 17 January 2024 (UTC)
ESO Dungeon Enemies[edit]
Hi, I saw you reverted my edits on the Ruins of Mazzatun enemies list saying it was inconsistent with other dungeons. I've made similar updates to other dungeons, as well as public dungeons, as I've run across them on my playthrough. My plan is to make that listing method consistent across them since I think it provides a more concise look at what enemies are per race within the dungeon, as sometimes it's not very clear at first glance with how some names are quite ambiguous/general. --Drakonian (talk) 00:13, 17 January 2024 (UTC)
- I can appreciate the logic behind the reverted changes but I think it would be best to bring that idea up on a talk page somewhere before implementing it wholesale. I like where your head's at, but I don't think it's particularly helpful for most dungeons. Enemy lists for dungeons should ideally be sorted alphabetically in most cases. There are several exceptions, primarily regarding dungeons that have a lot of trash mobs or with monsters that only appear in specific sections of a dungeon (see Nchuthnkarst and Moon Hunter Keep).
- Sorting enemies by species/race provides interesting information on the demographics within a dungeon, but with a place like Mazzatun, where the dungeon's loading screen/the rest of the page makes it clear that players will be fighting Argonians, it's not quite as helpful to list enemies by species because it's self-explanatory that the Xit-Xaht are Argonians.
- In dungeons where the format is applicable, sorting by geography can make planning for a run simpler: enemies of note (specifically special archers that use Taking Aim or bulky mobs that should take priority in a pull, like Stoneshapers) can be singled out by a reader and they'll know when and where to expect that enemy to show up. 90% of Mazzatun's enemies show up throughout the dungeon, so organizing the list in a table like Moon Hunter Keep would be overkill. Mazzatun's enemy placement isn't as complicated as Nchuthnkarst's and the compartmentalization isn't as clear as it is with Moon Hunter. There's no "progression of the roster" in Mazzatun like there is in MHK.
- Sorting enemies by demographic is an interesting idea: I like putting things in boxes by category. But given the function of dungeon pages, organizing enemies by race doesn't really help readers on a utilitarian level. Most people are coming to these pages to learn about the dungeon: layout, mechanics, etc. It feels similar to the idea of sorting ESO's People tables by race: interesting information, but where are these people located, what do we get from sorting them by race?
- To be clear, sorting by race doesn't "do nothing" for the readers in a general sense, but I can't see the utility in organizing enemy lists by race given the purpose of dungeon pages. We don't need to go that hard on compartmentalizing enemies: when we do, it's usually because there are a lot of mobs, and most of them appear in very different places.
- The Layout section or bio (paragraphs at the top of the page) feel like the best place for that sort of information. Giving Mazzatun as an example, the Layout section is where pulls can be described in detail, and race can be mentioned there. The bio for Moon Hunter Keep mentions that the entire dungeon is overrun by werewolves. Organizing enemies in a list with sections for Man-Beasts and full-on transformed werewolves would be interesting, but from a reader's perspective, when you run through the dungeon, it'll become apparent that the "Moon Hunter ___s" are man-beasts and anything with "werewolf" in the front of its name is a transformed werewolf.
- Some dungeon enemy sections are pretty inconsistent: I think White-Gold Tower's enemies were listed "in order of appearance". We do need to wrangle those, but sorting them by race doesn't feel like the right way to go about that. -MolagBallet (talk) 01:04, 17 January 2024 (UTC)
- I understand. I am kind of a categorizing freak, having done it in other wikis where that was usually the way things were handled for most situations, which happened to suit me just fine hahaha. In that case then should I just revert the edits I've made so far in this specific matter and scrap the idea moving forward? --Drakonian (talk) 01:14, 17 January 2024 (UTC)
- Sure thing! I sympathize with you whole-heartedly on the subject of being a category maniac: I love organizing information in little sections. -MolagBallet (talk) 02:12, 17 January 2024 (UTC)

Adding links to user[edit]
I'm trying to create a todo-list for myself which includes a link to Category:Morrowind-NPC_Pages_Needing_Images. Since internal links don't work for categories, it needs to be formatted as an external link. But lo and behold:
"It appears you are adding an external link to your user page shortly after creating your account. This is often a sign of people spamming. Please make at least 10 edits over at least 4 days and you will then be able to add external links to your user page. This action has been automatically identified as harmful, and therefore disallowed. If you believe your action was constructive, please inform an administrator of what you were trying to do. ESO - Enemies and Related Quests[edit]
Hey there, I noticed you reverted some of the changes I did with the enemies encountered in ESO regarding with related quests. I'm trying to understand what is considered a related quest for an enemy page. I thought if the enemies encountered during the related quests would be eligible. As of the Ogrim and Banekin pages, they were also encountered in the Reservoir of Souls (Which I believe is only available during the quest The Judgment of Veloth), would that also count as grounds for related quest?
-Raren, (talk) 12:13, 04 February 2024 (EST)
- The Judgment of Veloth definitely fits the bill for a related quest in that instance. If the enemies are just in the overworld, we generally don't add the quest to the Related Quests section, but if they're summoned during an encounter (for example, if you have to kill a Daedra Kynval before the real boss spawns) or the quest otherwise mandates that you kill them (killing Daedra in Laeloria to power the soul geode), that's considered involvement. Appearance in quest-specific instances like the the Castle of the Worm are also considered valid.
- In a public dungeon like Sanguine's Demesne, the enemies are an obstacle, but not exactly related to the quest. A Nightblade with cloak or anyone with sufficiently reduced sneak detection radius (which is pretty easy nowadays with the Champion Point options available) could just float on past all the dremora and ogrim without any trouble. Anyone can walk in without accepting the quest, and the enemies' presence would be no different.
- The line's a little blurry with 4-player dungeon quests, as you can technically sneak past most pulls in base game dungeons (not so much in DLC dungeons: the devs have cracked down on us by locking doors until we've killed specific pulls, sometimes every trash mob before the door), but generally speaking, most groups are not going to be sneaking past the trash mobs in dungeons. Public dungeons are one thing: everyone can play however they want in the overworld, but Undaunted dungeons are designed for combat, and it's a lot harder to skirt that expectation. This goes for adds too: the Dremora that enter the field during the fight against Horvantud the Fire Maw in City of Ash II are pretty much unavoidable no matter which way you slice it. If it's in a 4-player dungeon, it can have the quest.
- I hope that helps! —MolagBallet (talk) 17:46, 4 March 2024 (UTC)

- Thank you very much for explaining this to me and I'll keep that in mind in the future when I notice that with my playthroughs! That gave me more further clarification when adding related quest to enemies. I'll go ahead and add back The Judgment of Veloth to the Banekin and Ogrim pages.

Concerning Lore articles written in past and present tense[edit]
Hello. My questions concerning the above topic can be found at the UESP Wiki's Lore talk page. Since you're an admin, I was wondering if you knew the answers to my questions regarding which tense to use for certain articles. --KevinM(talk) 01:40, 16 May 2024 (UTC)
- Good question! I'm of the opinion that gods and individuals that we know are still alive by the most recent (chronologically) installment in the series should favor present tense. The most recent game on the timeline to my knowledge is Skyrim. If there's any possibility a given character could be killed legitimately within the bounds of the game's storylines (not counting cut content or removing an NPC's essential status with console commands), past tense should be used (General Tullius and Ulfric Stormcloak, for instance, fall under this). That way, we can keep the "canonicity" of certain events influenced by player choice opaque enough to not push reader opinion in one direction or another as to "what really happened" in a branching path, and maintain consistency in how we deal with historical figures.
- Gamespace articles are written in present tense because the player is experiencing these events as they happen: they encounter these characters in the world and can choose to interact with them. In contrast, a character article in lorespace is like a history textbook describing a historical figure and the notable things they did.
- General rule of thumb is that past tense should be used to describe what they did in the source material ("Ulfric sent an axe to Whiterun", "Molag Bal petitioned the Dragonborn to kill a priest"), but information in a descriptive or introductory paragraph for a character we know definitively is still around or could come back should be in present tense ("Meridia is a Daedric Prince", "Alduin is the World-Eater of Nord mythos", "Valerica is a vampire affiliated with Clan Volkihar"). If a character is scripted to die in a game, the introductory paragraph/bio should be in past tense ("Savos Aren was the Archmage of the College of Winterhold", "Lord Harkon was the patriarch of the Volkihar clan"). If the character cannot die in-game through legitimate means, I try to treat them like Wikipedia treats people of note who are still alive, like Prime Minister of Japan Fumio Kishida or Barack Obama ("Barack Obama is an American politician. He was President of the United States from 2008 to 2016" vs "Argneir is a Greybeard. He taught the Dragonborn to control their voice").
- When the next game comes out, if it's further on the timeline than Skyrim is (and it likely will be considering the trend of the mainline series occurring chronologically), we can change Skyrim-era character articles in lorespace to be in past tense unless TES VI confirms they still live in some form. The most likely sources for NPCs being confirmed as still alive in future installments would be seeing them physically in-game or current documents describing their role in international politics (dated recently to the start of the game, "High Queen/King Elisif/Ulfric of Skyrim sent a delegate to (city name) for such and such"). If a character is not confirmed as still alive, even if they're of a long-lived mortal race like elves, past tense should be used for consistency: we don't want to assume they're still alive just because they live longer than humans, and if they do come back, we can just change it to present tense.
- Tense for character articles in lorespace runs on a case-by-case basis, but most characters notable enough to have a spot in our list of historical figures are statistically going to be presented in past tense. If there's any ambiguity as to whether they could still be alive, the safest bet is to use past tense, especially if the character is mortal. I hope this is helpful, and thank you for contributing to the wiki! —MolagBallet (talk) 17:05, 16 May 2024 (UTC)
