Bethesda performs all its own design, programming, animation, and packaging in house, including duplication, testing, quality control and fulfillment in its automated 30,000 square foot warehouse. As a result, Bethesda has developed unique knowledge of the software industry from every business vantage. This not only allows for better quality control and delivery, but also for Bethesda to respond quickly to changing market demands for specific products.

Being knowledgeable in all aspects of the computer software industry has served Bethesda well by keeping it realistic yet dynamic in a fast paced and demanding industry. As a result, Bethesda has become one of the industry's strongest internal developers, successfully building from within at a time when others are contracting or failing. Their steady growth over the past decade has served as practical testament to the foresight of Bethesda's business model.

One of the industry's heaviest investors in R&D for its size, Bethesda has dedicated itself to building its current products with an eye toward the future. From the teams that created the award-winning: WAYNE GRETZKY HOCKEY, THE ELDER SCROLLS and TERMINATOR series, come the newest Bethesda products: X-CAR: EXPERIMENTAL RACING; REDGUARD; BATTLESPIRE and THE 10TH PLANET.

With a successful decade now behind it, Bethesda stands poised to inherit the benefits of being a proven veteran in an industry just reaching critical mass that demands technological skills coupled with experience. Game Tidbits[edit]

Starting off in Daggerfall can overwhelm the senses. No other game has such a huge world to explore. Travel around a land mass twice the size of Great Britain, exploring dungeons, castles, tombs, and even alternative dimensions. Just to walk from one end of the world to the other will take over 2 full weeks in real-time (we actually tested this!) Converse with over 750,000 characters that inhabit this world. In a day and age when role-playing games (RPG) average 40 hours of play time, Daggerfall is a game that sets new boundaries with over 200 hours of gameplay. It's no wonder that it took almost 3 years to develop this epic game.

Daggerfall is designed as a free-form game, to mimic the environment of pen-and-paper role-playing games. With a lead game designer who worked for 14 years at TSR, the company that produced Dungeons and Dragons, and a lead game programmer who is an avid role-playing gamer, Daggerfall is truly a labor of love. You can literally do anything you want and go anywhere you want. Join a guild and climb in rank to become a respected member of a Knightly Order. Become a spy and infiltrate the royal ranks, and even rebel against your own king. Become a thief who slips in and out of the shadows and steals the rare treasures of the world. There are six different endings, if you choose to play out the main story quest (See Game Storyline). But ultimately, the life you choose to live will be a unique experience that no other gamer will encounter.

THE ELDER SCROLLS SERIES[edit]

Daggerfall is the second chapter in the highly acclaimed Elder Scrolls series. Arena, the first chapter (released in 1994), garnered over a dozen awards of excellence, including Best Role-Playing Game of the Year. The Elder Scrolls series stands out as the only computer role-playing game series that replicates the pen-and-paper role-playing environment. No other game lets you explore such an open space with no confines. No other game lets you choose your path as a hero or a villain, or even live a simple life as a traveling minstrel or a thief. Riding on the success of Arena and Daggerfall, Bethesda has already started development on The Elder Scrolls Chapter 3 and The Elder Scrolls Chapter 4. With each chapter Bethesda will push the technology envelope to create a more immersive and enthralling environment. The Elder Scrolls Chapter 3 is expected to be released in late 1997, and Chapter 4 far beyond that.

THE STORY OF DAGGERFALL[edit]

In ages long gone, Tiber Septim forged an empire that encompassed all of Tamriel. The story of Daggerfall has its roots in this ancient conquest.

The emperor of Tamriel, Uriel Septim, secretly meets with you, telling you that a dear friend and ally, King Lysandus of Daggerfall, was recently slain in combat and his ghost now haunts the streets of Daggerfall City at night. No one knows why his soul is not at rest, but your emperor has requested that you solve this mystery and lay the ghost of King Lysandus to rest.

Your quest will not be easy. The region of Daggerfall is a snake's nest of political intrigue. You must gain the confidence of several members of three different royal families. You will encounter many strange and wondrous characters, such as the secretive Underking, the Warlord of the Orcs, and the King of Worms.

As your adventure develops, you discover an evil plot that has far-reaching repercussions. King Lysandus was slain by a minor noble by the name of Lord Woodborne. Lord Woodborne has grand ambitions and interests that go far beyond the throne of Daggerfall. He covets the emperor's throne itself.

Lord Woodborne has discovered the secret location of a rare artifact, the key to unlocking a monstrous automaton made of iron that was an unstoppable force in combat. If he were to discover the whereabouts of Numidium itself, all of Tamriel would tremble.

Your quest will take you to strange dimensions to stop the rampage of Lord Woodborne. Will you stop him in time? The fate of Tamriel is in your hands.

Reviewer's Strategy Game[edit]

SPECIAL REVIEWER'S DAGGERFALL GUIDED TOURS

Daggerfall is a gigantic and elaborate fantasy role-playing computer game. The time for completion is in the 200-hour-plus range. Knowing your limited time as a reviewer (deadlines and editors!), we have devised self-propelling in-game guided tours of Daggerfall's highlights. These tours will quickly give you a meaningful familiarity with the game, while walking you through many of its features and firsts discussed elsewhere on this CD-ROM. Any of the 3 tours should take no more than 1 to 2 hours. Of course, seasoned computer role-players are encouraged to "Go for it!" and play indefinitely. So as an added bonus, one of the tours plops you down at the game's beginning and allows you to experience what all players will at the start. To get the ball rolling, the solution for that first dungeon, Privateer's Hold, is provided. To prepare for the guided tours, take these simple steps.

Install Daggerfall. Follow instructions on the manila foldout that comes with the game. Copy the 6 saved games in the CD's SAVEGAME directory. Each of the savegames is in a separate subdirectory titled sequentially--"Save0" through "Save5." Use DOS, Windows 3.1, or Windows 95 standard copy procedures. For example, if using DOS, type "copy d:\savegame\save0 (where "d" is the letter of your CD-ROM drive) C:\dagger\save0 (where "c" is the letter of your hard drive, and "dagger" is the default directory into which the game is usually installed), and press ENTER.

Do the same for the other 5 savegames. Have the Special Reviewer's Daggerfall Guided Tours Companion supplied with the press kit at the ready. Start Daggerfall. At the first screen, click on "Load Saved Game." Select any of the 6 savegames you wish by double-clicking its picture. Get ready to explore some of the most intriguing places in the world of Tamriel. Follow the Special Reviewer's Daggerfall Guided Tours Companion for each savegame file.

One final note--these tours can only touch the surface of Daggerfall's complexity, thrills, adventure, and storyline. Have fun! These instructions are repeated at the beginning of the Companion.

Storyline[edit]

BATTLESPIRE is set in the era of ARENA, the first of Bethsoft's award-winning Elder Scrolls CRPGs.

In the time of ARENA, the Imperial Emperor's personal guards are known as the greatest warrior-mages of Tamriel. Only those who could master the challenges of the BATTLESPIRE were chosen for the guard. Located in a secure pocket universe drifting in mana-rich currents of the void, BATTLESPIRE was the ultimate proving ground and testing facility for the Emperor's elite war wizards.

As gifted and experienced hero, you are eager to test your skills in the martial and magical arts. But upon arrival at Battlespire, you find no one alive and everything wrong. The Preceptors are dead, the libraries and vaults have been ransacked, and fiends are looting amidst the ruins. And the magical portal has been sealed behind you, preventing your return to Tamriel.

As you wreak your vengeance on BATTLESPIRE's invaders, you learn that the mighty Daedra Prince Mehrunes Dagon and allied daedra clans have taken the supposedly-secure BATTLESPIRE as their own dominion. If the evil Prince and his minions can so casually brush aside the defenders of this citadel, you realize you face a more desperate test of your skills than you bargained for.

Game Tidbits[edit]

BATTLESPIRE is an action role-playing game set in the world of Tamriel, during the era of award-winning RGP, The Elder Scrolls: ARENA. Setting new standards for 3-D graphics in a CRPG, BATTLESPIRE will astound you with its otherworldly architecture, labyrinthine castles and passageway, and fiendish designs.

Like any true RPG, BATTLESPIRE has a robust character design system, character interaction, and intriguing storyline.

BATTLESPIRE features a point-balanced, detailed character creation system based on the character creation scheme of The Elder Scrolls: DAGGERFALL. Weigh the advantages of high attributes, advanced skills, inherent advantages and disadvantages, weaponry, and specific magic masteries and spell lists in building your character. Continue to fine-tune your character design between level advances by spending build points gained in gameplay.

The various and distinctive monsters will truly test your mettle. They hear your footsteps, smell your blood, and track you like prey. The AI system is the most advanced ever implemented in a RPG. And dialog with monsters and NPCs lets you try to exploit factional rivalries and hatreds among the daedric clans, pitting fiend against fiend - a splendid tactic, until your treachery and perfidy is discovered.

The BATTLESPIRE combat system is robust and intuitive, and with signal advances upon the widely-praised systems of DAGGERFALL. Fans of hack-and-slash combat can experiment to find the right mixtures of weapons, armor, and maneuver to deal with the specific features of each monster, and can supplement their arsenals from magical items and artifact discovered along the way. Admirers of the wizardly arts will fancy the numerous customizable spells, and bouncing fireballs that explode on contact with flesh - YOUR flesh, if you aren't careful. And students of combined arms can experiment with subtle mixtures of brute violence and subtle sorcery in confounding the fortunes of the enemy.

The advanced multiplayer options let you sneak around and batter and fry your pals in deathmatch bloodbaths. Or play cooperatively, and pit your teamwork and strategies against the Battlespire's antagonists. You can even play team vs. team, racing to complete objectives as you struggle to survive.

Storyline[edit]

Four hundred years before the political upheavals recounted in the chronicles of Daggerfall, Tiber Septim, Emperor of Tamriel, aspires to unite the provinces under a single rule. One province that resists his will is Hammerfell, ancestral home of the Redguards, the dark-skinned warriors of Tamriel.

But the Redguard High King, Thassad II, has shuffled off this mortal coil, and a fierce civil war erupts between the CROWNS, fighting for Hammerfell's sovereignty, and the FOREBEARS, those who welcome Tiber Septim's rule. After much bloodshed, the Crowns and their leader, Prince A'tor, are defeated, but only because the Forebears sign a pact with the emperor, allowing Tiber Septim to rule Hammerfell as his own. He posts garrisons in every city to school the Redguards in obedience to their new emperor.

One Redguard who refused to commit himself in the civil war is Cyrus, a mercenary and pirate who long ago left Hammerfell in search of adventure. But Cyrus returns to Hammerfell upon learning that his sister, Iszara, is missing on the Island of Stros M'Kai, the island town that had been the center of Crowns resistance.

Cyrus returns to Stros M'Kai in search of his lost sister, where he experiences first-hand the harsh rule of Lord Richton, Provisional Governor of Stros M'Kai, and servant of Tiber Septim. Cyrus also encounters a band of pirates, The Restless League, who resist Richton's rule and wish to restore Hammerfell to the Redguards.

Cyrus disregards the civil unrest and rumors of the Prince's return, seeking only to find his missing sister. However, Cyrus discovers that her disappearance is not all that it seems...and he quickly finds himself at odds with the pirates AND with Richton's Imperials.

Game Tidbits[edit]

The world of Tamriel is rich with culture and history, and The Elder Scrolls Adventures: REDGUARD, focuses on the legend and adventures of Cyrus, a redguard mercenary. The adventures of Cyrus take place about 400 years before DAGGERFALL, when all of the provinces of Tamriel are being conquered by the Imperials to form the Empire of Tamriel as we know it in the other games. What better way to tell a redguard story than through a swashbuckling adventure!

Using a 3rd person perspective, REDGUARD'S camera system allows for dynamic panning of the action. Imagine this... you approach an unyielding guard at the city's palace. Once you artfully sneak your way past the first guard, you are sternly greeted by the corrupt Governor and a handful of his guards.

As you exchange a few hostile words, the camera pans around showing the guards drawing their weapons and coming after you. The camera zips back as the guards come after you. It is six to one!

You dodge several swipes of the sword, and deftly grad hold of the chandelier, pulling yourself up and cutting it loose. The camera flips down to show the chandelier crashing on the men below, while you hang from the cut rope above. It's all part of the Redguard experience and it all happens in real time, under your control.

Your adventures all take place on the island of Stros M'Kai, an island vibrant with life. The island is quite large, and free for you explore. Each character has something unique to say, each building is meticulously crafted, and each area has something new for you to discover. Even when you stand still, you will notice how your surroundings are alive.

The towns people go about their business in the busy market square, birds fly by and are occasionally underfoot, ships dock in the harbor, and the wind from the ocean gentle pushes the clouds in the sky and waves the flags that hang overhead. You will notice the little attention to details. Pull out your sword, slice a candle in half, and 2 seconds later the top of it falls of onto the table.

But in addition to your fighting skills, you must hone your puzzle solving skills. Utilize your wit to translate ancient writing to enter the Dwarven ruins, sneak past the guards to break into the palace, and even discover lost treasure by deciphering a pirate map. X marks the spot!

REDGUARD deftly blends action, adventure and storytelling in an elegant system that will have you experiencing a game unlike any other.

The Elder Scrolls series stands out as the only computer role-playing game series that approaches the immersive charm of the pen-and-paper role-playing environment. Riding on the success of ARENA and DAGGERFALL, Bethesda is continuing to expand the The Elder Scrolls universe, with titles as REDGUARD and BATTLESPIRE. These two titles are designed to develop the rich history and environment of The Elder Scrolls universe, and will lead the series into other genres, including action and adventure. The third chapter of the Elder Scrolls, MORROWIND, is the true heir to the series, and is also in development. The third chapter will continue to celebrate the values of the pen-and-paper role-playing experience, as you can explore the world freely without constraints. No other game series lets you choose your path as a hero or a villain, or even live a simple life as a traveling minstrel or a thief.
